Nutritional supplements for resolving canine diarrhoea

The administration of medicines and supplements always poses a problem at the moment of truth. Owners test their imagination by inventing ingenious types of “creative cooking” to hide tablets and capsules in food. Tablets inside a piece of cheese, antibiotics hidden in a sausage, mixing powdered medicines in food, among others. Yet it can prove fruitless when the tablet is discovered intact after the food has been eaten.

    New formulations designed for pets

Recently, some formulations have appeared on the market that are better suited to getting animals to take their medicine and they appear to facilitate treatment adherence and, therefore, effectiveness. These new formulations comprise active drug substances incorporated inside meat particles with very attractive organoleptic characteristics for dogs.

They have been used to deliver antiparasitic agents, joint boosters and nutritional supplements for gastrointestinal problems, among others. This article talks about the last item, not just because these supplements are so easy to administer, but also because of their proven effectiveness.

Evidence supporting the use of nutritional supplements in diarrhoea processes

Affinity Petcare researchers have studied the clinical efficacy of the new Advance supplements in dogs suffering from diarrhoea. Here we present a summary of the study data1:

    Subjects and method

The study looked at 15 subjects with a diagnosis of acute diarrhoea not associated with a systemic disease.

The dogs followed their usual diet with the only modification being the daily administration of supplements for diarrhoea processes (commercial name GastroForte), until the clinical picture resolved.

The nutritional supplements were particles with a high meat content that incorporated the active ingredients mixed in. They contained:

Hydrolysed chicken protein, smectite (19.6%), water, vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, rice starch, soy lecithin, hydrolysed animal protein, animal fat, fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS, 1.72%) and antioxidants.

Their antidiarrhoeal activity is mainly based on:

    • SMECTITE, an ultra-fine clay with a high adsorption capacity, which promotes water retention and helps generate more compact faeces, thereby curbing the diarrhoea.
    • Prebiotics and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), which favour the development of healthy intestinal flora.

Subjects received 2 to 4 particles per day depending on their weight.

    Results

The results were very good, with 90% of the cases of diarrhoea being resolved in 48 hours.

The supplements are more than just a snack, they are efficacy

Although dogs like the new formulations, they should not be considered snacks or treats for pets. They are medicines or supplements indicated to improve a pet’s health when suffering from a particular disease for which their efficacy and effectiveness have been demonstrated.
